History of Golden Gate Hotel

Golden Gate Hotel has been a cornerstone of South Melbourne since 1852. This historic pub has long served as a gathering place for the local community and has been at the heart of many important moments in the area’s history.

In 1903, the South Melbourne Football Club held a meeting at the hotel, where publican Skinner was presented with a silver-mounted cigar case. Known for his entrepreneurial skills and deep ties to the hotel industry, Skinner was a beloved figure in the area, also serving as treasurer of the Liquor Trades’ Defence Union and president of the Hotel Property Owners’ Association.

Under Skinner’s leadership, Golden Gate Hotel flourished. He was a driving force behind local community initiatives and played an integral role in shaping South Melbourne’s development. Following his sudden death in 1912, Bob Williams took over the hotel and oversaw a major renovation in 1913. This transformation included the installation of lavish cedar fittings and the creation of a bar that was considered one of the finest in the city at the time.

For over 170 years, Golden Gate Hotel has remained a beloved local establishment, offering both a rich history and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. It continues to serve as a popular gathering spot for locals and visitors alike, celebrating the tradition of community and the spirit of South Melbourne.
